The Hangover Part 2: Released May 26
The guy sitting next to me in the packed theater when I saw The Hangover Part 2 summed the movie up perfectly as the end credits scrolled: “That’s out of control.” That’s what I thought too, all the way through the entire movie. Another line that sums the movie up? As Bradley Cooper’s character Phil said within the first two minutes of the film, “This time we really fucked up.” And fuck up, they did.
The basic storyline of The Hangover Part 2 is that Phil, Alan, and Doug all travel to Thailand for Stu’s wedding. Stu wants to keep things low-key because of what happened in Vegas (during The Hangover), but somehow things get out of control and the guys end up losing Teddy, Stu’s fiancee’s 16-year-old brother, and they all wake up in Bangkok.
Fans of the original Hangover will appreciate the humor in the second movie. The only problem is that some of the jokes are so in your face- there’s a scene with a pole dancer who isn’t what she appears to be, for example- that they feel a bit overdone. The funniest parts of the movie- and by that I mean the parts that had the entire theater roaring with laughter- are the “waking up” scene, when the guys are waking up after their wild night, and basically any scene involving Mr. Chow, who makes a comeback in this movie. Also, the pictures at the end of The Hangover weren’t exactly expected, so they were absolutely hilarious. At the end of Part 2 when Teddy turns up with a phone full of pictures, it’s as if you were expecting it, and it’s not as funny that way.
Overall, I’d recommend seeing The Hangover Part 2 if you liked the first one. Don’t go into it thinking it’ll blow the first movie out of the water, though. And definitely don’t go into it if you aren’t willing to put up with Mike Tyson’s weird and awful singing.
The movie stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, Jeffrey Tambor, Jamie Chung, Bryan Callen, Mason Lee, and Paul Giamatti.
